What is an egress window (EERO)?
An emergency escape and rescue opening (EERO) is a window or door large enough to escape through and for a firefighter to enter — required in every sleeping room.
The code sets a minimum net clear opening size, height, width, and a maximum sill height so occupants can get out and rescuers can get in during a fire. People often call these 'egress windows.'
Basements with sleeping rooms typically need one too, sometimes with a window well. The exact dimensions are in the residential code's EERO section.
