What is a certificate of occupancy?

A certificate of occupancy (CO) is the document a building department issues confirming a structure complies with code and is safe to occupy for its intended use.

A CO is typically issued after final inspections pass. For new buildings or change-of-use projects, you generally can't legally occupy the space without one.

It's the official end-of-project sign-off that the work met code for its intended occupancy.
